Imlil and High Atlas Mountains Full Day Trip

Imlil and High Atlas Mountains Full Day Trip
Imlil & Atlas Mountains

Imlil, a small Berber village with many hotels and restaurants, lies about 70km from Marrakech. It serves as the last major village before the Atlas Mountains and is the starting point for hikes and treks to Toubkal or the surrounding area.

The Atlas Mountains, North Africa’s highest range, feature Mount Toubkal soaring to 4,165 meters above sea level. Divided into three parts—the Middle Atlas, the Anti-Atlas, and the High Atlas Mountains—they offer impressive mountain biking trails, trekking routes, and photography opportunities. These mountains are the region’s tallest, offering walks suitable for all abilities, with mules available for riding. Authentic Berber villages provide stylish Moroccan accommodation in traditional houses, with official guides ensuring a memorable experience. The Berber people, Morocco’s original inhabitants, are known for their endurance, hospitality, and friendliness.

Day Trip Overview:

The day trip to the High Atlas Mountains starts early from Marrakech, passing through Tahnaouet (Tuesday market), Valley Ghighaya, Moulay Brahim gorges, and Asni (Saturday market). Travelers journey through terraced fields of vegetables and fruit trees, like walnuts and cherries, before reaching Imlil at 1740m. There, a local guide welcomes guests with mint tea before they choose between mule rides or walks through Berber villages such as Ait Souka, Targa Imola, and Tagadirte, surrounded by orchards. The trek includes a stop at a waterfall before ascending to Armed village at 1900m for lunch with a Berber family, offering views of Mount Toubkal at 4167m. After lunch, visitors can explore the village before descending via the western route, passing through ancient irrigated terraced fields and villages like Ashien & Fimlil before returning to Imlil and then Marrakech.
